Grandma's visit

Grandma came and went. Visit was short but it sure was nice to see her.
Here's a picture of Grandma with the girls at Fired-up, a ceramics studio in Peoria Heights.

Which is a tradition with Grandma Sylvia as well.

Big Weekend

Lots to do. Tonight is the Homecoming football game and the class reunion is having a tent put up just for the 87ers. It should be fun.

Tomorrow night is the dinner/dance at the Civic Center. And of course, anyone in our class who is now residing in the city of Washington (our bitter HS rivals) is probably going to wake-up with toilet paper in their trees Sunday morning. Just sayin. Not that I personally KNOW about any plans or such.

Mom is coming back for a visit. I hope to have pictures to post.

Later taters!

Week Review

No games, no practices and yet I was still busy this week and weekend.
Had some friends over for a cookout last night and a game of Mexican Train (Dominoes).

This weekend is Homecoming weekend at the High School...and my 20th Class Reunion.

Thursday is the Parade and both girls will be participating in the Parade through town. Peyton will do the Soccer Club Float. Brenna and her tumbling/dance classmates will be representing TWIRL AND TALENT where she goes for her classes.

Friday night is the Homecoming game...and a tent for my class reunion.

Saturday is a dinner event at the Civic Center in Peoria. It should be fun. I had fun at Scott's 20th class reunion last year, met some of his friends and talked with some really great people. Lots of "pranks" will be played at ours, I'm sure. I admit, I'm more curious about who "grew-up" and who's still stuck in High School.

And finally, Mom is headed back for a visit and we'll be spending time with her for the next week or so. It's looking like Peyton will get to show her some of her "soccer" moves because her first game back from injury will be the 13th with the rec league team (Aqua Sharks).

She's been pretty active. She can already raise her arm up over her head and today she ran about 1 mile and half to keep in shape. Her club soccer team has been doing "conditioning" before every practice since August and so she'll probably fall a little behind...although most of her soccer skills involve footwork and not so much speed.

It should be busy this week, I'll post when I can.

Metro U11 Girls are No. 1

Morton Pumpkin Classic Tournament.
Peyton's team won 1st place today. Even though she couldn't play because of her collar bone, she went to the games to cheer her teammates on and sit on the sidelines in uniform.

Even though she couldn't play, at least she could sit on the sidelines and have an ice cream bar!

Girls Sports

It's been a good weekend to be a girl athlete in Metamora, IL.

St. Mary's Grade School, in Metamora (my old stomping ground) won the Class AA State Title in Softball.
Metamora Grade School won the Class A State Title in Softball.

First time in the history of the State Tournaments that both Classes were won by teams in the same town. Quite a feat when you consider that most of the metro Chicagoland area has over two dozen schools and Metamora has only two.

Germantown Hills is considered part of the township of Metamora but is a seperate village, in case you wondered what town I was talking about. Even though we live in the village of Germantown Hills, our address is Metamora as it is the Post Office we use.

Just for those who may be a little confused. I thought I'd confuse you more.

Last days of Summer

Today is the first day of Fall...not too many more summer pictures. Air is dry, no humidity and nights are cooler.
Only a smattering of leaves are starting to turn. Two more weeks, it will be full Fall bloom.
Here's a few Brenna photos.

Peyton's clavical

Peyton injured her clavical (collar bone) at practice. It took a trip to the ER Tuesday night for x-rays.
It's a good thing my 401 investments are spread throughout the healthcare industry, seeing as our family is funding it quite nicely.

She went down after getting tangled with another player going after the ball in practice scrimmage and her collar bone tore.
I say tore because she didn't exactly break it. She went to the Orthopaedic office to see Dr. Garst on Friday. He confirmed the injury the ER doc found in the x-rays.

Dr Garst described it as when a grown-up breaks their clavical (collar bone) it breaks apart and overlaps or there is a gap. Peyton's collar bone is more like a stick. When you go to bend the stick it tears but doesn't completely break through. When it heals, she'll have a bump but as she grows it will completely flatten over time. He predicted her bone would grow over the tear in about three to four weeks. She goes back for an x-ray on October 12th and he seems to think she will be ok to play in the October 13th soccer game for the Aqua Sharks.

I broke my collar bone as a kid and I had to wear one of those figure 8 slings for months (or at least it felt like months). These days, since collar bones heal faster than most bones and as long as surgery isn't required... an arm sling to hold the arm in position is all that is required. Peyton doesn't even have to wear it all day and night...she gets to take it off, only uses it during school and when we go somewhere.

She's already walking around swinging her arm back and forth. The only thing she isn't able to do as of yet is lift the arm up over her head.

She's out of PE until her next x-ray and no soccer...so she's pretty bummed.

But all in all, it's not a complicated or lengthy healing time, she still gets to play the last two games in her soccer season and a tournament with Metro Select at the end of October. So not all is lost, it's not a life-altering injury; Brenna's wrist break was definately worse than this and she is completely healed.

She did go to her make-up game (Aqua Sharks) on Thursday and cheered her teammates on. Her teammates lost 4-0. They kept saying, "Peyton we neeeeeed you!"

Mom, it looks like her first soccer game after her injury will be the one you will be here for.

The Wonderful World of Seventh grade

Brenna is still doing Chorus this year. Her first concert (Fall Concert) is in October. She is doing well so far. Snap Grades shows she is currently getting a solid B in History and a B- (almost a B) in Literature. None of the other classes are registered yet.

Brenna is signed-up for tumbling class on Monday nights and Tuesday nights is dance/poms. She is going to Twirl -n- Talent in Washington. The lady who owns this place lives across the street from us and Jenny Ashley (Jenna from soccer's mom) is the tumbling teacher. Brenna's friend Emily (Emmie) is taking both classes with her. Her mom and I will trade weeks car-pooling the kids to an from.

Next week is Jane's week, the following is mine, etc...

She is currently working on her Lit homework and playing with Bandit everytime she brings her squeeky toy over and sets it in her lap. Looks like it's my turn.

Brenna started out sixth grade as tall as my chin. She has started out seventh grade a smidge taller than my nose. She is wearing a size 5 shoe...finally doesn't have to wear little girl shoes and can find a few "cool" Jr. style shoes in 5's. should crocet her a pillow that says, "A girl can NEVER have too many shoes."

Enjoy the picture.

Roofing

New roof today...if the rain holds off.

The shingles currently on our roof are curling and buckling in spots...it's about 15 years old.

Time for new shingles. New color is Slate.

I'll post pictures.

Later taters!

Aqua Sharks - Double-header Saturday

I'm not going to give a play-by-play, it would take too long.

Peyton's in-house soccer team lost both games on Saturday. Their record is 1-2.

It started off with her team being short on players (this is what I don't care for with in-house rec leagues, kids don't show, don't call the coach to tell them they aren't coming)...makes me wonder what kind of social skills they will have as adults. I digress...

None of Peyton's teammates, nor herself, got a break throughout the whole game and after the first half they had to play with two of the other teams players.

It was hard to watch them struggle to stay in the game toward the end when they all got tired.

Peyton wouldn't score in the first quarter of the game..both Scott and I scratched our heads when she booted a few of her attempts wide...way wider than she normally does. I kept thinking she was doing it on purpose.

She had alot of attempts but her major victory during that game was passing it off and assisting her teammates on their scores...and her defense and ball-handling "moves" she was laying down on the other team. At one point the other team's coach was yelling, "There's four on one, someone needs to pick the ball." Peyton was manuevering in and out of about 4 of their players who could not stay on top of her long enough to get a foot on the ball. We were sitting on the sidelines between both teams parents...some of the kids on the other team are Peyton's school friends. I heard some of them say when Peyoton stole a ball or someone kicked it to her and she'd run by the sidelines, blowing by the other team..."Good, god, can anyone stop that kid?" and my personal favorite, "Here she goes again!"

By the third quarter, coach Charlie put Peyton in at keeper (goalie) and when the teams lined-up for the kick-off the other team's girls were cheering and jumping up and down..."Peyton's at keeper!" I guess they figured they'd get some touches on the ball with her out of the midfield area! Aqua Sharks wound-up losing that game 4-2

After the game...Peyton's friend (Carly) who was playing keeper in the first quarter came up with her mom (I know them both well) Carly's mom, Holly said to Peyton, "Great game kiddo and that was super sportsmanship what you said to Carly after your team scored that goal on her." Then she told me after our team kicked the goal, Peyton ran up to her, grabbed her hand and said, "Good try Carly." Then it dawned on me, she couldn't score the first quarter because she didn't want to hurt her friend's feelings. What a kid!!!! The best part, she didn't have to score any goals, it's more important that she get out there and play with her friends and develop the kind of social skills she'll take with her wherever she goes in life.

Scott was talking with one of the coaches from the other team after the game and she said, "I knew Peyton was going to be good, I had no idea she was THAT good."

The second game wasn't much better but all of the girls were pretty tired from having to play the first game with no break. Peyton still managed to do well with her moves and ball-handling, choosing to pass it to her teammates and giving them a chance to score. It didn't seem so important for her to be the one to take all of the shots, make all of the plays. She's becoming quite a team leader.

After the second game the other team's coach came up to Peyton and said, "Thank you for not killing us with 20 goals." (Peyton had a few shots hit the pole or go slightly wide)This coach was her first coach in in-house two years ago. They only beat us 3-2...even though our team was dog-tired the whole game.

Peyton was pleased with her performance even though she scored no goals. And both Scott and I told her how proud we were of her for being a good teammate and a good friend.

So all in all...it wasn't a "total" loss this past weekend.

[P.S. She did admit to me later she missed the goal kicks on Carly because she didn't want to hurt her feelings...but in a club game, when there is a keeper she doesn' know, she's going to BURN THE KEEPER!!!!!]

Soccer Score

This Fall Peyton was able to compete in the inhouse league since her club team is not doing league play, is just doing tournaments. Her first game was Saturday.

The Aqua Sharks won 5-2. Peyton scored two of the goals while assisting on two others.

She was playing keeper on the other one scored.

It was interesting to see the other team and the girls and their level of play compared to Peyton, who's somewhat advanced at her skill level since she plays club soccer. It was also nice to see her pass the ball to others and to help them set-up and score.

Funny observation. When the other team kicks it passed their own goalie out of bounds, the team who was trying to score (in this case Peyton's team) gets a corner kick. At 4th-5th grade level, they don't always do a corner kick, most times the refs just drop it and someone either kicks it or throws it in. Well, once the other team kicked it out, Peyton picked up the ball and ran to the corner. The ref with the whistle in his mouth just followed her over to the corner, she threw up her arm, he blew the whistle (while chuckling) and she kicked it and looped it around front of the goal. It landed right in the middle, right in front of one of her teammates, right where you want it to land. But it just dribbled on by because all the girls were looking at her with a "what did you do that for" look on their face.

One of the other refs approached the guy who did the corner kick and said, "they do corner kicks at this age range?" The ref replied, "Apparently!"

Peyton did it a second time, only this time she over shot to the other side of the goal because one of the fifth-graders on her team who knew what to do with it was standing there and she kicked it in to score the fifth point.

It was clear Peyton was playing at an advanced level and considering what we pay per year to be a part of Metro Select Soccer club, I think it was evident we are getting our monies worth with the level of play she demonstrated. Now we're just hoping she learns to take the leadership position and to help the other gilrs understand positioning and play set-up. They have a healthy respect for her.

One of the coaches from the other team is Peyton's crossing guard on her way to school...she told Peyton, "You're not supposed to mop us up like that!" Peyton laughed...Scott and I just smiled becasue we thought she took it easy on the other team. She could've easily done more but she was holding back...some of the girls on the other team were her classmates and she didn't want to be considered the "ball hog" running all the plays, not letting her teammates get a chance to score. She was a good leader and motivator for her team.

Next Saturday she plays two games. Two tougher teams, we'll see how the Aqua Sharks do!

Ronan

Baby Ronan weighed in at 8 lbs 6 oz.
Luvvvv the name. Can't wait to hold him at Christmas.

New baby coming

NOPE it's not mine!

Ryan and Christine's baby is coming soon!
Got an update from Grandma Sylvia and it looks like they will induce Christine on Friday, August 31.

Prayers and thoughts go out to them. I'm so excited for them.

Time for a post

It's been awhile. Just goes to show you how crazy busy I've been with work and all the goings on around the house.

Had a tournament in Granite City this past weekend. It's down near St. Louis.

Peyton was playing up on the U12 girls team. It was brutal. Lots of teams from Chicago (go figure) and St. Louis premiere league. We got our hind-ends handed to us in all three games. But then again, it was a learning experience for the girls. Only 4 of the girls on the team were actually true U12's. The rest were girls pulled-up from Peyton's U11 team. They played teams where all the girls were 11 or just turned 12. They had some pretty big girls to play against..it was brutal.

It was also the first time for all the girls to play 11 v 11. That means 11 players on your side vs 11 players on their side. Peyton and her U11 team have played 6 v 6 and 8 v 8 but never 11 v 11...so there was new positions and formations to learn.

The weekend wasn't a total bust. There was a pool at the hotel. Saturday night after the games we ate out and went to the mall in Fairview Heights. Brenna got some clothes for school and Peyton got a new pair of basketball shoes.

All in all, it was a nice getaway.

No pictures were taken, (sorry) but I kept forgetting to take the camera.

9 year-old

Peyton's birthday partay was a success. 8 of her closest BFF's came over, the neighbor's let us use their pool, there was ice cream there was cake...presents were cool. Lots of gift cards. Dad took Peyton tonight to a couple of places to spend her gift cards.

At some point during the evening the girls figured out the pool was all their's so they broke out a game of "chicken"...as you can see in one of the pictures, Peyton was the winner. Not that the other girls looked surprised by the outcome.

7th grader

She's babysitting tonight. Brought the little four-year-old by for a visit. He likes Peyton's toys, doesn't care for Bandit. She's just glad to be making some money.

Girls are back

Had a great time at Camp Whidbey.
Both enjoyed their trips. Brenna wishes she could stay longer.

Back to the mommy-job. Tomorrow is the Gus Macker and of course, Peyton is on a team. They are the Germantown Hills Smack Jammers....that's their team name. I'll post pictures as I can.

Movie Review

Last night Scott and I went to a movie...1408 with John Cusack and Samuel Snakes-on-a-Plane Jackson. It was based on a Stephen King novel Room 1408. It was classic King with foreshadowing and all the suspense one can handle without running out of the theatre screaming. As we were leaving the theatre, I told Scott, "That was messed-up." He agreed. But it was a good kind of "messed-up." Unbelievably excellent acting on the part of John Cusack. I'd even say Oscar-worthy, but he's been in my "top five of Oscar-worthy actors" for years, so I admit, I'm biased. Scott also admitted, this was a role tailor-made for an actor like Cusack (creepy, dark, moody, and yet articulate enough to be a complete smart-ass.) After watching it, you just knew he owned that character, no one else could've portrayed it the way Cusack did. No one.

Would I recommend it as a must-see in a theatre kind of movie...or wait until video?
I am honestly stumped on that one. If you're the kind of movie-goer that likes the high drama and suspense King is known for, it can only be viewed in the theatre...big screen. At one point there was what appeared to be blood running out of the cracks in the walls (in Room 1408) and both Scott and I had to glance behind us because it sounded like it was trickling out of the wall behind us in the theatre, so audio tracks were excellent...if you have surround sound, this is the perfect movie.

If you just like good acting, then this is a definate video rental. Without a doubt, RENT IT.

So I guess to answer my question, it depends on what you're in the mood for.

It's been a couple of weeks

I looks like July 2nd was the last time I posted to the blog.
Peyton finished soccer camp and then both girls flew out to Seattle/Whidbey Island to stay with Grandma and Grandpa (Rod and Sylvia)...it's been quiet around the house.

I'm looking for the camera card to download some pictures. I might work on that tonight.

Weekend update

Not much to report. Brenna still has to wear the long cast another week. It's looking like this Friday 7/6 is the day she gets the short cast.

Weekend provided us an opportunity to catch-up at home and to spend some time relaxing. It was nice to not have to be somewhere for once.

SBD update

I've gotten a few questions about the total weight loss. I'm down 16.5 lbs. It's starting to slow down as I add foods back in. Also, it's been pretty "crazy-busy" these past few weeks, so all in all, not bad.

I haven't been as good about walking/exercising. I'm actually shocked that I lost weight at all. The stress from Brenna's wrist fracture and subsequent shift in focus alone would normally cause my body to just start packing on the pounds. Stress is the biggest factor in my weight. The more stress I'm under, the more I eat.

So, considering...I'm pleased.

A Scooter Trip into the Ditch

Who knew that would result in a broken wrist?

And how about that trip to the Emergency Room for X-rays and a good talking to by a resident. Dr. Zussman took care of the break and casting the next day in surgery. They had to put her out to snap the growth plate back into place. Recent X-rays show very little shifting so it'll be a hot pink short cast next week. Then possibly a waterproof cast before Seattle...or none at all, depends on the healing.

Here's a picture of her playing second base. Before the career ending (just for this year) accident. Summer is going to be awful. No softball, no pitching, no swimming, no jumping on the trampoline. However, it IS still possible to read a book, so at least the summer is somewhat saved.

Final Game - Sunday Run Down

Metro Select beat Geneseo for the final game on Sunday 10-5.

G-pa Don, we know how much you luvvvvvvvvvvv Geneseo. The Geneseo parents were more obnoxious this game then the one we beat them 3-2 in the Mossville Shoot-out in May. After many strong warnings from the ref in the first half, he went over to their side-line at half-time and we saw him talking to them and pointing to the parking lot. All of us were secretly hoping he would clear out their side as they were just plain embarrassing their girls.

So, it was an undefeated soccer tournament at a lovely soccer complex. Fun was had by all. I'm not sure what their standing was by the end of the tournament but Metro Select most likely finished in one of the top spots. Springfield Predators were slaughtering everyone in their division and their goal differential was pretty hard to beat.

Peyton scored another two goals against Geneseo for a grand total of 4 goals for the weekend. And G-pa Don, she enjoyed the 2 against Geneseo the most. :)

Game 2

Metro Select won the second game. 7-0
#8 scored 2 of those goals...and had a nice "scissor move" to move the ball around a defender.
Coach Barazzini was watching this game (he coaches the u13) and was admiring her moves.

She did great, the girls did great, I think they liked their new black shirts with their numbers on the front AND back.
Also, it's been great fun swimming in the hotel pool and always having a soccer friend to hang with. :)

Better run, it's shower, then dinner and an early night. Third and final game is tomorow 8 am.
Later!

Muscatine, IA

Last soccer tournament of the season, then we're done for the summer.
Muscatine has a nationally recognized soccer complex, and I can see why. It's gorgeous, grass is perfect. Peyton's team is playing their age bracket (instead of playing-up one) and they won their first game at 8 am this morning (2-1).

Most everybody on the team is staying at the Days Inn in Wolcott, IA and driving to the complex (about 20 minutes). We drove down last night and Scott got both girls teams registered. Right now we're all hanging out in the air conditioning and the kids are taking a quick dip in the pool before resting for game 2, which starts at 2 pm.

Tomorrow morning we play the same Geneseo team we beat in the Midwest shoot-out. It should be a good game.

The girls are having to adjust to the 6v6 (six players instead of 8) format and the field is smaller so the game is quick. They managed well this morning, just barely pulling off a win against a team from Grand Rapids MI.

More later. Time to get #8 out of the pool.

Jericho is BACK!

Good news, Jericho junkies!
CBS is bringing back Jericho for 7 new episodes. More if the ratings go up. I didn't realize over 8 miliion viewers was considered, "not very many", but those 8 million, myself included, threw a big stink...and so it looks like they're bringing it back.

So watch it! It's worthwhile TV, if there is such a thing.

Now, if we could all put that kind of pressure on the Chimp in Charge to bring the troops home, we might get some reults in that travesty as well.

Tuesday Day Evening Double-Header

Grandpa Spud made it out to the High School diamond to see Peyton play a double-header against Bloomington-Normal. It got a little chilly so he had to get out his blanket.

Peyton's team lost the first game, tied the second. Grandpa got to see her smack one ball between second and center field, only to have the second base make an outstanding catch. The person on third tagged-up and ran-in to home to score because the girl who caught it threw it to third to try and get her out but third base missed it. She struck out a couple of times and walked the rest. She scored a couple of times while on base and Grandpa Spud got to see her slide into third once. She lovvvvvvves to slide. I think she'd slide even if she didn't have to.

She made the final out in the second game to keep the score tied. A fly ball to right field, both first and second were backing up to make the catch, she stepped-in at the last minute when they both pulled-back and stuck her glove out. She fell over but still managed to keep the ball in her glove.

Everyone cheered. Coach slapped her on the back and told her "Good catch, Peyton!"

Monday Night Softball

Brenna's team got beat by Riverview (9-6). It wasn't that they couldn't beat them it's just they all seemed to be having an "off" night all on the same night.

But fun was had by all and Brenna had a matching softball ensemble (shirt, visor, shorts, slider pad, etc), and really, isn't that what matters?

For those who asked...

So far I'm down 14 lbs. (As of this morning)

South Beach diet going strong!

School's OUT!

It's Summah time!

Last day the girls reported to school. Both got on the bus, stayed for an hour, got handed their report cards and then shipped back home via bus.

Peyton made the all B's honor roll.
Brenna got all B's and only one C+...only two points away from all B's honor roll. I don't want to downplay her accomplishment. Sixth grade was terribly hard and this last semester she did not lose focus and she did not give up. She brought two C's up to solid B's. Math was the sticking point but overall a C+ with tremendous effort on her part (she brought that up from a C-). She was doing Probability...it was so hard I could not help her with her homework...YEAH daddy! She still managed to get close to a B and I am so terribly proud of her effort and hard work!

Weekend Update

Friday Night
Brenna's softaball team (6th-8th graders) beat Washburn 11-6.
Scott is one of the coaches. She did a great job, brought in some runs, stole some bases and even pitched a few innings.

Saturday
Peyton had a double-header in Deer Creek. The Flames lost both games. The scores were close but I can't remember off-hand what the final's were.

Sunday
Metro Select Soccer team had 2 league play games. Lost 2-0 to Little Illini (Champaign) even though we lost, our U10 girls hung close with the older U11 girls from their team. Also, lost to SASA (Springfield) 2-0. Again, the girls hung close and even looked a bit better than the other older team. Not bad all in all.
Games were played in Bloomington.

Today's Forcast

Rainy, T-storms, cooler.

I predict the laundry pile will be reduced, somewhat...dinner at the table with the whole family around it...kitchen cleaned afterwards.

It's been 12 lbs so far on SBD. I have to admit, I'm not so hungry on this plan...with the snacks mid morn and mid afternoon, I haven't had that gnawing hunger usually reserved for diets of no substance. It's been difficult with the exercising (aka walking) with the weather turning sour and the constant chauferring of kids here and there...it's not been easy to keep it up, but I'll find the time, when and how I can.

Memorial Day Weekend Run Down

Girls got some Heelys. Big sale at Dunham Sports and a credit for returning a softball bat that turned out to not be "up-to-snuff". They've been wearing them every where!

Friday night was relaxing. Saturday morning was Flames softball for #8, tournament in Tremont. Due to rain and the fact MTHS was graduating the games for Sunday got cancelled. #8 then decided to pick-up the soccer game on Sunday morning. It was the Morton tournament. Metro Select beat Mahomet 4-0. #8 (This is her number in soccer as well) got the final goal late in the game. Surrounded by 4 Mahomet defenders, she juked (meaning in football is: To deceive or outmaneuver a defending opponent by a feint; fake) all 4 of them and then pounded in the final goal. She kicked it so hard, no one on the sidelines knew she kicked it until it had hit the back of the goal net. She then ran out from the huddle behind her, arms raised-up in the air big ole smile on her face. One of the other parents said, "She's like a barn lit on fire." It was sure fun to watch. Sorry for no photo, it was an early morning game, not enough time to grab the camera...even though it was sitting on the kitchen counter on my way to the door.

12-year-old got in some babysitting and earned a little green. Softball practice on Sunday evening.

Monday was a graduation party for Jessica who graduated from MTHS. She's going to Eureka College on a soccer scholarship. Also on the list for Monday, mowing grass, laundry, laundry, oh and did I mention laundry?

Last 4 full days of school...then it's summah time!

Guess What "Dropped-in" on the White House Garden?

Now, if we could only get the birds to do this EVERY TIME the Chimpmaster lies to the nation, we could condition him to start telling the truth.

Well, we could always hope.

Anniversary

Well, today is our 14th Wedding Anniversary. I got a lovely bouquet of flowers, a nice card and dinner out without the kids. Just up the street, but no kids nonetheless. It was nice to be able to have dinner and just talk without interruption. Once we got home both girls were out in the driveway masking off a "Kings Corner" square with tape. Right now I hear the bouncing of a basketball. It's about bedtime, so I'll let them wear off that last bit of energy.

Busy weekend

Both girls had a sleep-over with a friend. One had one Friday night, the other had one on Saturday night.
Scott and I actually got some stuff done outside, I got the flower bed under the light pole planted (I'm working on picture) and the front door foyer cleaned-up and the front door wiped down from all the dirt. Scott got the spots in the yard seeded and layed down straw and watered it. House is relatively clean...laundry almost done.

It was nice not having a soccer/softball game to run to. They really eat-up a weekend and put us all behind at home. The soccer player actually took a some time to kick the ball around and work on some of her "moves"...it was nice to see her enjoying it again and not the wrinkle of concern while she's playing a game. I got alot of,"Hey mom, watch this!" and then a big giggle after she performed her trick with a barefoot and soccer ball. The coach encourages the girls to kick around while barefoot at home to strengthen their feet and develep the callous' for when they play.

I will be adding pictures soon.

Perspective

I'll take nursing the broken heart of a daughter over the tragedy of not making the cheer/pom squad over this...they are all someone's child.

Cheer/Pom Tryouts

Well, she didn't make either squad. She was bummed. I was nervous and anxious all day. She hopped into the car and ripped open the envelope and started to cry because her name wasn't on either list. I told her how proud I was of her for having the courage to try-out and for all of her hard work and effort. There, of course were other girls who didn't make either squad, so she will have some shoulders to lean on tomorrow at school, which is bound to be pretty difficult day to get through. Her try-out partner didn't make it either.

We went for a walk around the block and talked and by the time we got home she had found a few things to be glad about and didn't seem too depressed. I think she'll be ok. For me...I will too. I swear, I think it was harder for me. It's never easy when your child feels that level of disappointment and that you cannot shield them from it. Kind of like when you pick them up at school and they are standing off by themselves and a group of kids are taking and laughing amoung themselves, totally ignoring your child. It breaks your heart a little everytime.

I explained to her that disappointment is a part of life and that it was ok to feel sad and cry. But then she had to pull herself up by her boot straps and move forward and that in a few days summer break will be upon her and she would forget all about the heartbreak of not making the cheer or pom pom squad. That she would be a better person for having gone through this.

She is asking for help with her English homework, so she's already in the moving forward phase.

She's my heroine tonight.

Choral Concert in the Courthouse Square

Just got back to work. I left to go watch my 6th grader in her choral debut in the courthouse square downtown. Local schools pick a day in the months of April-May to do a lunchtime performance. Her 6th grade chorus performed.

I feel pretty lucky that I work somewhere where I can leave my desk and work responsibilities for an hour or so over lunch to go see my daughter sing in her class chorus.

They were all superb.

It was sunny and breezy and an overall beautiful afternoon to be outside.

After her group was finished I asked her, "Isn't this better than sitting in a classroom?" She smiled and said, "Yah!"

I have to admit, it was better than sitting in my cubicle, starring at the computer screen. Much better.

What is Wrong with CBS Executives?

Where is JERICHO?

New CBS fall schedule shows it was cancelled. And for what?

Moonlight, a show about a vampire detective? And this is must-see TV? Or how about Swingtown this is about a town of swingers [evidently not the jump, jive and wailin' kind].

I'm thinking someone at CBS should get fired over this. JERICHO was a thought-provoking, intelligent program. It was my guilty pleasure. You know, like the feeling you get when you watch a really good PBS or Discovery Channel program?

JERICHO made my Wed evenings. Geez, I even learned how to record on DISH network so I could watch it later. The clues...the clues...I will miss the clues. [sniffle, blow in kleenex, wail] Where is the commitment to good TV programming? Since when did networks like CBS stop fostering the development of really good shows that entice and enthrall audiences? And Swingtown is going to do what JERICHO did?

Well, I guess this gives me a really good reason to pick-up a book and start reading again.

Shame on CBS, shame!

Angst Over Cheer/Pom Try Outs

Tomorrow is cheerleading and pom pom tryouts for my eldest. (12 years old, 6th grade). She is trying out for the cheer squad and the pom pom. She put down cheer as her first choice but is also trying for the pom team.

I tried out for cheer. I won't go into my history with cheerleading but I did make a squad or two. I have to say, I have way more angst over my daughter trying out than I remember for myself. I mean, what if she doesn't make either? What if all her friends do? This could make for a disasterous 7th & 8th grade. Perhaps I'm over-reacting. I just don't want to see her diminished to tears of disappointment, that feeling of rejection. She is the social one. Friends and peer relationships are very important to her so if she feels left-out, it's devastating.

I've already warned my husband to prepare a speech or words of encouragement for Thursday night. Thursday is try outs. Every girl is to meet in the cafeteria afterwards and they hand out a sealed envelope indicating which girls made which squad. They are not allowed to open them until they get home. I guess that's so they [judges/coaches] don't have to witness the tears while the some girls squeal in delight? Life can be so cruel for a 6th grade girl.

Say a prayer, hope for the best.

Mother's Day Contest Winner

I got this great email from my twinkie (twin sister). Enjoy!

This is a story that was submitted for a Mother's Day moment contest.

We had this great 10 year old cat named Jack who just recently died. Jack was a great cat and the kids would carry him around and sit on him and nothing ever bothered him. He used to hang out and nap all day long on this mat in our bathroom.

Well, we have 3 kids and at the time of this story they were 4 years old, 3
years old and 1 year old. The middle one is Eli. Eli really loves chapstick. LOVES IT. He kept asking to use my chapstick and then losing it. So finally one day I showed him where in the bathroom I keep my chapstick and how he could use it whenever he wanted to but he needed to put it right back in the drawer when he was done.

Last year on Mother's Day, we were having the typical rush around and try to get ready for Church with everyone crying and carrying on. My two boys are fighting over the toy in the cereal box. I am trying to nurse my little one at the same time I am putting on my make-up. Everything is a mess and everyone has long forgotten that this is a wonderful day to honor me and the amazing job that is motherhood.

We finally have the older one and the baby loaded in the car and I am looking for Eli. I have searched everywhere and I finally round the corner to go into the bathroom. And there was Eli. He was applying my chapstick very carefully to Jack's . . rear end. Eli looked right into my eyes and said "chapped." Now if you have a cat, you know that he is right--their little butts do look pretty chapped.

And, frankly, Jack didn't seem to mind.

And the only question to really ask at that point was whether it was the FIRST time Eli had done that to the cat's behind or the hundredth.

And THAT is my favorite Mother's Day moment ever because it reminds us that no matter how hard we try to civilize these glorious little creatures, there will always be that day when you realize they've been using your
chapstick on the cat's butt.

WELCOME!

Welcome to my blog. I hope to share with you some hopes and dreams for myself and my kids but mostly just the day-to-day diary of our busy lives. I have two daughters. Both very different and unique and yet I see myself in both of them. My husband has managed to pass along some of his genes. Thank god I love his family! :)

I am a soccer mom, softball mom, track mom, basketball mom and chauffuer for all the BFF's. We regularly host sleep-overs on the weekends and have the kids in the neighborhood over to our house to play on a pretty regular basis.

How does one handle that constant stream of everyone's kids? I guess it's better than having no kids over! Besides, I like knowing where my kids are and who they play with.

I am sometimes overwhelmed beyond belief. Oh yeah, and I work full-time, outside the house. I live in a cubicle by day, chock full of pictures of my kids! I also started a color-coded calendar of daily events so I know who has what, when and where I need to drop them-off or pick them-up. Some of the other parents on my daughter's teams have more than 2 kids...one parent has 6...HOW DO THEY DO IT AND STILL REMAIN SO SANE!!!???

Well. It's getting late. Better get some rest so I can get-up and function tomorrow.

Alarm [set], lights [out]. Sigh. Oh yeah, and like my Grandma Marie used to say...from Sun Up to Sun Down a Mother's work is never done.

Goodnight.
